Spent a good time of my day following some advice from, once again, our friends at the SOL forum. I discovered that there is a way to track your Sky thru the rail system all the way to your local railyard IF its being shipped via Union Pacific Railroad.

step by step--- (this took me a few hours)

1- find out from your dealer what trucking company transports the cars from the trainyard to the dealership.

2- call the trucking company and (being super super nice) tell them you have a car being shipped from GM to your local dealer and that you would like the "railcar" number. This is tricky because they are not supposed to talk to the general public. If they won't help you you can ask your dealer to call and get the railcar number for you. you will need you entire VIN number to get the railcar number. So if you don't have the entire VIN, don't bother calling or bothering your dealer. If you don't already know, you can ask the trucking company which train company the use. In my case, it gets to final destination by union pacific.

3 - take that railcar number and goto the union pacific rail site. They have online trace capability. Very similiar to tracking a UPS or fedex package.

4- do the trace-- bammo!!! It will tell you the status of the railcar. I'm not sure yet how often the UP site is updated. My last entry on the site trace is 5/13 and today is 5/15.

5- When the railcar gets to lordstown, the cars are offloaded and wait for the appropriate train going in your direction. when they are loaded back on a railcar... its a different railcar with a different number.
so, for myself... the last info I have is that its at lordstown. They don't show an updated railcar number yet for me so its safe to assume its still sitting at lordstown.
when its reloaded, I will get a new railcar number to trace.

a little more info---

When you go code 4200, that means that your car was picked up from the plant and began shipping to Lordstown, OH. In Lordstown, you sky joins the rest of the GM clan (cobalts, etc..) and waits for another train to head out in your direction. The train shipper from lordstown is CSX.

Through my searching, I found that my railcar is not in UP's possession yet but still in the possession of CSX. The UP trace site is linked to CSX's so it showed me the status even though CSX has the car.

I called CSX just to see if they could give me more detailed info, like when they plan on leaving lordstown and I found that CSX won't tell you a thing! They are very tight lipped.

the next part is for people out WEST----
Once your car is loaded back on to the railcar, CSX will take it to the Chicago area. In my case, Bensenville, IL. In Bensenville...Union pacific takes possession of the railcar and it will finish the trip via UP all the way to Cali.

in short-- CSX= plant to lordstown to chicago
Union pacific = from chicago to Cali
local trucker = from UP railyard to dealer.

My situation for you to compare---

my car "shipped" 5/9 which means it went from the plant to lordstown.

the same day, it went code 4800 which means it was unloaded at lordstown, awaiting a full load out west possibly??

today is 5/15 and my railcar shows "empty" and sitting in lordstown. so its been 6 days and its still in OHio. :banghead:

I understand that the trip from the plant to chicago is the longest part, once UP takes possession, its a straight shot to CALI... about 5-7 days.

then it can sit at the railyard for 48 hours. I believe they have 48 hours to get it off the train and on a truck out of the railyard.

If you are not out west, then you may have to just call the appropriate shipping companies and try the same thing I did. Be courteous to everyone you talk to, cause if they help you, they are doing you a huge favor.

Good night, and good luck

Call 'em back and have 'em put our VIN on your car to fill it up faster! No way am I going to even attempt to call for our railcar # (I tried Saturn 800 # today and was sweet but they saw me comin' and clamed up). Appreciate your investment and good read on transport process. I hope ours arrives before Memorial Day weekend! Hope yours beats ours :D .

thanks for the compliments... what really did it for me was when I went to code 4200.... now I am antsy as ever. Another thing is I really, really want this thing before Memorial day.... I'm running it pretty close though so not sure if its gonna make it.

If dealers could track each others orders, I'm sure I could work something out with my dealer but the way I understand it is that they can only get the status of their orders only.

If there was a way, I'd be doing my best to hook you guys up.

I can tell you this is very frustrating...

I have two of my customer's cars already on the way. Both of them show that they have been SHIPPED 3 times and BAYED 3 times, :banghead: :brentil: I ordered the statuses by dates and the last status shows BOTH of them shipped withing 10 seconds of each other. This tells me they got stored at Wilmington then they left Wilmington (shipped), they got to "some" railyard and got "stored" (bayed) there, they again where shipped and bayed at "another" railyard and it has shipped again from there. I'm hoping the next stop is our Store. I will be awesome to deliver 2 SKYs at the same time. One Midnight Blue and One Triple Black.

Regards,

yep, everytime the train stops at a railyard.. it will show either 4B00 for bayed or 4800 for rail unload... (if they actually take it off the railcar).

mine went from 4200 (at wilmington) to then 4800 at lordstown..meaning it was offloaded at lordstown.
when they put it back on the railcar... it "should" go back to 4200... then 4B00 or 4800 again when it gets to chicago.
then finally, 4200 when it leaves chicago and I shouldn't see another change till it gets to the railyard in cali... and I will see one final 4800 and proably 4B00 before the truck picks it up

now of course, this is assuming all the GM codes are accurate which we all know they aren't always but in your case, sounds like its going exactly how it should and was described to me.

I'm hoping to use the GM codes in coordination with the union pac. trace site to see where its being bayed and such.

Sure, he should track everybody's.:) :)

It take's time to track your car and you have to know how to get the info, you people should track them yourself. I've said it before if you guy's go to the Solstice forum you can learn alot. We knew the trucking company's, their phone numbers, which company deliver's to what state's, rail info.

Heck, we even had a traffic cam that people would watch looking for car carrier's to leave. ( Now that's was crazy )

Now anybody that has car's delivered to New England, it come's only by truck and Allied Automotive was doing the trucking. Your dealer can call them or go to their web site and open a tracking account. He can track it right over the computer.

I believe Allied also truck's to Florida after it come's off the Rail car.

Jack cooper trucks to Texas after the Rail car.
And there are more but you have to go to the Solstice forum to get the info.

A webcam!!!! hehehehhe, and I thought I was over doing it! :D

one thing I left out was that when I called the guy at Union Pacific, the first thing he said after he figured out I was Joe general public was " This is a solstice, isn't it?"

I started laughing and then told him about the sky so he might expect to get more calls like he did with the Sol. He said he was getting quite a few calls when the sol first came out and that he usually helped those that would appear to have done their homework. He said it frustrated him when people would just call and pretty much ask him to do everything.
keep in mind if you decide to try this that those were the people he didn't help. Have all your ducks in a row before calling so they have to do minimal work.

and thanks again to those at the SOL forum who pointed me in the right direction and spent the time explaining how the process works.

Your right ! You have to do your homework first. Most people are really nice and try to help you if they can.

SKYHOPE - I've updated my inital post with some more info that I learned today about CSX. ---

When the railcar gets to lordstown, the cars are offloaded and wait for the appropriate train going in your direction. when they are loaded back on a railcar... its a different railcar with a different number.
so, for myself... the last info I have is that its at lordstown. They don't show an updated railcar number yet for me so its safe to assume its still sitting at lordstown.

Now for your info---- as of 5/15 your sky is sitting on railcar # SP516466 at Wilmington. It has been loaded on the railcar.
you can trace it here --- http://c01.my.uprr.com/pet/motorVehicleTrace.jsp

you will see when it gets to lordstown and then unloaded. From that point, you will most likely get a new railcar number and I would have to call back to Union Pacific to get it. At least, thats whats happening to me.

Hope this helps!!

WOW. Excellent. Jack and I thank you. Looks like our Sky sits in the car at the plant waiting for a full train. Your info got Jack to thinking about an old pal he has @ UP. While his pal did not know anything about tracing VINs to associate with specific rail cars, he did provide the following info:
Our rail car is a triple deck enclosed model, it has orders associated with it not to exceed 70 MPH and it is being pulled by a CSX train known to the insiders as the "Chessie"!
Once our Sky gets transferred to the UP our contact can get all sorts of details on it including the scheduled arrival time at the destination and how many cars are headed for that location. Would this type of info be of benefit to you or does your contact have access to same?

and tell him to speed that train up to 170!!!!

OOOOOOOOOORRRRRRAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

for my Jarhead buddies out there!

this is kinda funny-- The guy at UP was telling me today that after we got off the phone yesterday, he got called to the front gate.
he goes out there and this guy is there saying he has been out there watching the trains come in and he just saw a red sky with black top get unloaded. He wanted to come into the yard to check it out. The UP guy asked him if he had a VIN and he would check the car for him but the skyguy didn't so he apologized but said he couldn't let him for security reasons.

Sitting out in the parking lot watching the trains come in is almost as bad as posting a webcam!!!! The UP guy got a kick out of it and said that was a first. Just shows how far some of us will go.

Was that anyone from this forum?
