So they recently dug up my neighborhood and FIOS is available. Just curious if anyone has it and if it's worth it for me to drop Comcast for my cable and internet. Price is about the same.

Does anyone know if they have to dig from the street up to my house? I imagine they do.

It is very worth it.

I've had it for 2 years now [My town was one of the earliest deployments]
It has been incredibly reliable compared to comcast and the price is much better for what you get.

The one thing I really like is you can record shows on one DVR and then watch them on a simple cheaper Set top box in a different room.

I don't think comcast has that option yet. I believe you need to have a DVR for each TV.

I switched in January.

Pros:
1. The signal quality is much better i.e. there is no "HD-lite" and I can only see pixelation with one channel (Nat Geo HD) which I believe is source related and not due to any forced degradation from the provider.

2. There are way more options and there's a ton of digital music (which I never used previously).

3. The installers were great and left a personal # to call with problems.

Cons:
1. If you watch the bandwidth it's not always what it's claimed to be, but it IS faster than cable w/o a doubt.

2. For some reason my installer tossed my wireless router to the side and replaced it with the "special" Verizon one  which sucks a$$ in terms of signal. I haven't gotten around to changing it.

3. Randomly (rarely) the box goes on the blink and you have to cold-reboot. Whatever. I probably just have a defective box.

Overall pretty happy with it. Beats Crapcast for sure.

Ooops. Forgot to add - there may be some significant drilling and destruction to get the line into your house and in an appropriate location. They had to run all new cable in my place because of the disaster left by other (cough, cough) cable companies.

Getting the line to your property itself is no big deal.

Thanks for the comments. Pretty much everything I've read in my research has been positive. If I change and don't like it, after the contract expires I'm sure comcast will have an offer to entice me back.

I would wait for your neighbors to switch over first, then jump in if they have a good experience. The quality of the service can be location dependent.

I switched from Comcast to Verizon 6 months ago after they dug up the neighborhood. My On-Demand channels all pixalate and my Internet has gone dead three times for up to a day. Not good when you run a web based business from home. Verizon has been back three times and I need to call them back again for the On-Demand issue. Also, when they first diagnosed a bad cable modem, they would not deliver one or allow me to drive three miles to their network facility to pick one up. No - it had to arrive by UPS which took three days and my business was down during that time.

Again, let your neighbors test the system, then make a decision.

On the plus side - their phone works fine.

i used to work for verizon too! my dad still does, ever since it was GTE. what do u do?

back to topic, we got fiber late last year. caused all sorts of problems at first. connections were choppy, sometimes nonexistent. when the new year rolled over they finally got everything fixed and now its been working flawless.

fiber needs to be rolled out to your house from a Verizon central office, then connected to a box that converts the light into a digital signal. everything is ran from coax. u also get a wireless router.
