Napa Valley Mustard Festival:

January 31-May 3, 2009
The annual Napa Valley Mustard festival is alive and going strong. Whether you are in the mood
for Music, marathon running, fabulous photography exhibits, gourmet foods or just the
appreciation of Napa Valley in springtime, you will not be disappointed. This festival is world
renowned and has grown exponentially since it’s inception in 1994. Its humble beginning drew a
few hundred patrons, while today, thousands descend upon the valley to enjoy the bountiful
pleasures of mind, palate and soul.
The Mustard Festival is essentially a non-profit, county wide event benefiting many different
organizations from health care to art in the schools, and has become integral to the support of
many different commendable causes. The Festival also offers local businesses an opportunity for
greatly increased revenues during January, February and March as well as an opportunity for
professional and amateur photographers and artists to exhibit their works.
A bit of history behind the mustard flower that blankets the valley in a rich yellow carpet is
worth mentioning. Father Junipero Serra had come from Spain to Mexico in the 1800's to spread
his faith. He was told of a beautiful land to the north full of wildlife, grand trees and verdant
valleys. Serra decided he must see this land and with the aid of some Native American guides,
set out to explore the country to the north. Father Serra had brought with him Spanish Mustard
seeds and scattered them all along the path of his travels. The following year they returned south
and followed a golden ribbon of bright mustard flowers that had sprung from the northern trek.
This path of “gold” was where Father Serra established his “Rosary of Missions” that extends
from San Diego to Sonoma and is indeed why California is veritably covered with Spanish
mustard in the spring. It is thought by some that the mustard flower should be the state flower
and may very well have been except that it has a very limited bloom time unlike the beloved
California poppy.

I would like to set this up for February and maybe we can make this into a weekend Run.. Please post your thoughts... I would like to but this on the calender for WCKCC EVENTS...

Hmmmmm

I do not know where this Mustard Festival idea came from but, we made a suggestion at hockey lunch Saturday that we would be willing to Host this event in March seeings how it is in our area. So Gary is this just a coincidence?

WCKCC Napa Valley Mustard Festival Run

Any chance we could do this on Sat 02-28-09?

Gloria & Charles
YES there is a chance if we get enough people interested in this trip.

Road-Runner called me this evening and he discussed how time is short to plan for the Mustard Festival because it ends March 3. Actually, the festival season begins January 21 and ends March 28. Also, because this was Bwana Mama's idea to begin with, it was agreed we will take the lead and start making plans for a WCKCC day event to Napa Valley to see the mustard fields. This is always a great venue for the photo buff's.

But there is another day event shaping up in February on Valentines Day too. (see the S.F./Marin Headlands post) Our Mustard Festival run could be on Saturday February 28, just 2 weeks after the Valentines Day run, or Sat. March 7th or Sat. March 14th. As Hosts we feel the best date is March 7 because that is the Calistoga Jazz Festival weekend.

For some, this is hockey season. We have a hockey game to attend on March 21. There may be other conflicts for each of us on the above dates. So we need your input. Check this link out for all of this years scheduled events: Napa Valley Mustard Festival Calendar of Events

Post your interest ASAP so Bwana Mama and I can decide if we should make plans for this run.

Note; because this is a WCKCC event drivers are not allowed to drink any alcohol and waivers must be signed by non-members.

Ok Everybody - What are the correct dates?

Bill & Patricia:

As the "official organizers" what are the correct dates for the Festival?

Whatever they are, it seems we have several potential dates for us to group-up for attendance, but they are limited because of hockey.

Hot Frash and I could possible make most, if not all, of the dates current proposed.

We know that March 21st is out because of the group hockey game.

March 22 works for us
March 7th works for us
February 21/22 works for us
February 8 works for us

I'm still working on the Empire Mine - Chester - Oroville Casino Run two dayer for late April.

Feb Dates

Not sure what dates are good for us in February FST SKY is going in the shop for his custom paint job . He will be away from home for about 10 days.

If he is out we will certainly be there.

David, did you read my post #6? The date of the Mustard Festival is posted there, it runs about 2 months. There is a link to see the 2009 schedule of events.

As the Hosts we would like to do this on March 7 or 8 because of the Calistoga free Jazz Concert and various vendors that will be present that weekend. Mama Bwana thinks we should drive to Anderson Valley and have lunch at River Rock Casino which over looks the valley. On the drive back toward Napa Valley we could stop in Calistoga, check out the festivities and the shopper women can do their thing.

We want to see as many of our Kappa family as possible join the run so the date has not been set yet, just taking a poll at this point. But February is not looking good at this time. We can't do the 28th and March 1 I'm staffing the Napa Valley Marathon. Plus we have Sonia's lunch run on Valentines Day. And YES March 21 is Hockey!

I'm going to check with flyingZ and see is they can make this run because it is near them and that might mean scheduling the run on a Sunday for them. That would mean Gothunda and KJSky would not have a hockey conflict also.

March 7th

Bill, Ed and I could make the lunch portion and maybe the drive part as well if you choose March 7th (we have early hockey on Sunday the 8th). We have hockey the night of the 7th with KJSky and grandkids at 7:30. We are an hour and a half away from Napa to Stockton. So if we left our Kappa family at 3:00ish we could meet our hockey buds at dinner at 5:00ish! The best of both worlds! Barb

Grant, Rodger That! Guess you got my call.

Barb, if that is what you want to do Great! What would be a reasonable time for you to be in Napa at the same meeting place we used for the Safari West tour? We were thinking 10AM, but you have a long drive to Napa. I sure have to hand it to you guys...you are road warriors!
