I just took delivery of my Sky this week and I was considering getting the dealer installed paint protector added to the vehicle. The finance guy told me it should be done within the first 30 days, and that it takes about 6 hours to install. Before I invest the $595 for it, can anyone out there say if they had it done, and if so, does it really keep your paint "like glass" and well protected?

From what I understand, the paint already comes "sealed" from the factory--Don't waste your money on that (I did not) I just use a high quality claying, polishing and sealant. Whalla, the paint is in heaven--

I didn't get it, never had to in the past & the paint on my other two Saturns held up just fine.

It is a complete waste of money! 6 hours? That is a joke...more like 30 minutes. My detail guys even say it is bullcrap, they do recommend the undercoat though.

I believe the sealant costs the dealer $50 to install and they charge $550???!!!

Crazy! Even as a car salesman I can't agree with that.

Are you talking about a clear coat? Or the clear bra? I was thinking of getting the clear bra so rocks don't chip the paint. I don't want to pay for something that isn't going to do the job! :nono:

The dealer closest to us was trying to force this as a mandatory $800 add-on - which included the "paint protection" and a gas cap. We walked and went to another dealer.

I sold for six years. "Paint protection" is ALMOST a joke. If there is an IRON CLAD guarantee to protect against acid rain, etc., then it MIGHT be worth it. As more and more cars (almost ALL cars now) are covered in base coat clear coat there is almost NO NEED for aftermarket "paint protectant". A few coats a year of clear coat safe wax and you are all set. (Do NOT use a natural shamee to dry a car, it removes wax!)

Undercoat is even more complicated. If you read new car warranties completely you may find that some manufacturers will VOID the factory corrosion warranty if aftermarket products are applied!! Improperly installed the weap holes in doors can be blocked and the doors won't drain. I have a 1997 Chevy Express Van. It has no aftermarket protection. A few months ago I installed new brakes and rear helper springs. The van was on jack stands. While under the van I gave it a real good inspection. NO corrosion on the body or frame. None.

Don't waste your money. Most of us will be "playing" with these cars and many will "live" inside a garage. If you REALLY want to get rid of the money, send it to ME.

We got our Black RL applied with xzilon protectant at the dealership.. the cost was the same 595.00 and to me it is well worth it, especially on black. The bugs wipe off with just water and soft cloth. . I was present when the tech in prep put it on and he had me feel a before and after and there a big difference noted in the finish and shine after applying. It felt like glass.. super smooth. They did all surfaces exterior/interior/dash and even the rims. Has a warranty of 6 years. Here is the website to check out.

A dealer promised me MSRP so I placed a deposit. When we talked 2 weeks later he let me know that clear coat ($995.00) and vin etching ($499.00) were mandatory addons. He wouldn't budge and neither did I. I now own a Z4 which I custom ordered, paid less than MSRP, and was not requred to pay and additional $1.5K for the pleasure of doing business with them. So much for Saturn.

Paint protector is nothing more than sythetic wax that is applied to the vehicle. I have my car done every week. It is usally reapplied every few months or so to keep your paint from fading.

buying a decent wax and spending a few nice days every now and then babying your car is all the paint protectant you really need.

Based on what I have seen and read - if you buy $150.00 of car care products, apply them yourself, you will outshine the "deal"

Not worth it!

My dealer performed the operation before I had a chance to say no..It doesn't do anything as far as I can see. I had it done to a previous Saturn and there wasn't any difference at all. I have had some touch up done on my Sky and they haven't even offered to recoat the areas where there is new paint. I even wonder if anything was done at all for the extra money. I always use Zaino Bros products and it seems there is nothing between the clear coat and the clay bar and wax treatment..I think I'll take her in and see what they say when I want them to touch up the areas in question with more of their "paint protector". It seems the first courtesy wash cleaned the first coat of it off entirely. Just more Junk!

Yes, we put the paint sealant on before the clear bra. The clear bra installer couldn't come until 2 weeks later. The installer used a clay bar to clean off all products from the car before he applied the clear bra.

For those of you who have added the clear bra I have several questions.

1. Did you purchase the kit from the dealer? I notice there are several places where you can purchase the pre-cut kits for the Sky.

2. Did you have the dealer apply it or have another specialist apply it? Has anyone tried to apply such a kit themselves?

3. Did you also apply the clear protector for the bumper, lights, and side mirrors as well as the hood?

4. Did you apply to the rocker panels as well?

1&2) Purchased from reputable local installer. Had it installed by a pro, I saw him do it and if you feel lucky have at it, it was a pain in the but just watching! Lots of work.
3)Bumper, fascia, side mirrors, hood: 8mils. Headlight lights turn signals: 20 mils

4) No.


and I too was duped into the super duper wax job, my dealer calls it the "Touch of Class" treatment....it's more like the "Douche my @$$" treatment, but I was not going to wait three more months for a vehicle that didn't have it! Cut my losses and called it good.
