Stockpiling Parts

Does anyone have any input on stockpiling parts? I notice more and more parts are being discontinued. I have started collecting items I feel may be needed down the road, but was curious what others thought.

Rubber parts are always an issue unless they are still manufacturing replacements. Rubber can go bad even sitting on a shelf in the dark in a warehouse. It ages/de-gasses from day one. Exposure to UV speeds up the process a lot though. When buying new rubber parts, start protecting it ASAP with conditioners because although new to you, it may have already sat on a shelf somewhere for years. So I would still be cautious of stockpiling rubber parts.

Personally I have had good luck restoring rubber parts using wintergreen oil with great results. I've never done any weather stripping, but for carb boots, air intakes, etc. Wintergreen oil is the only thing I have ever found that actually works.

There are two different designs of that windshield gasket. The early 2007s have what is called a plan-A, later 2007s on up use a plan-B gasket. So make sure you get the right one.

My early 2007 originally had a plan-A windshield gasket and convertible top, both in poor condition. I replaced both with a second-hand plan-B version. I like the plan-B "SO MUCH" better, very happy with the improvements, especially how the door glass seals against the windshield gasket.

These pictures were taken before I removed the plan-A gasket. I am holding the plan-B for comparison. Unfortunately I did not take pictures of the differences of the mate on the convertible top. I feel the best change is right by my thumb, the area that the side windows seal against. The plan-A has a flap that can get messed up by the glass. Sometimes the glass rests behind the flap, sometimes over the flap. It's bad when it's half & half with a crease. The plan-B is a smooth rubber bump & valley design that consistently seals properly.

Rob,

had a nasty thunderstorm and only had a couple of drops go in. I cant capture on camera the seam between the weatherstripping, but you can see there is a very, very small gap between them and they're "squished" right where they meet. I took it back to the dealer to readjust the windows, so we'll see later today if that fixed it.

Personally I have been collecting parts for about a decade.

I started with Kappa unique parts. Many of the parts come from the GM catalog and will be available from GM once you figure out what the new or different part number is. For example, for several months you could not get a charcoal canister but it turns out that the canister from the HHR is a direct replacement for the Sol/Sky part with minor mods. Saturn part numbers started drying up early and we went to Pontiac numbers. Then we went to on-line resellers, ebay and places like Redline Auto parts to locate spares.

The unique parts include things like the rubber bumpers that mount to the top of the fenders and cushion the hood. The Sol and Sky use different fenders and hoods, so of course these rubber parts are different. Ths Sol parts are still avalable, the Sky ones are getting hard to find. We have the 3d model for the Sol parts (two different designs) and print them as needed. Dont have the Sky part yet.

Other unique parts are things like:
The cable assembly in the trunk releases the buttresses and opens the trunk latch. Plus the cables that run from the assembly to the latches.

The buttress latches, left and right are a wear item as well

Flap cables, flaps, flap hinge parets, cable clips are all wear items that need sparing

High wear items on the top include the side sliding cables, the front latch, wear tabs over the windows, rubber feet in the trunk,
The buttress trim bezels
The trunk latch - built in relay
The trunk tortion bars, left and right. They do break occasionally or if you leave the trunk open . . . they go.
Headlights and Tail lights Unique to the car. The back up lights on Sol and Sky are parts bin items.

The hood release cable

Having a spare top is a good idea if you can find one in good condition that is not too expensive.

Inner fenders are unique and tend to break

and everything that is made of rubber or similar material that keeps water out. Door perimiter seal, door inner and outer window seal, trunk seals, rubber feet that the top mates with when in the up position, rubber seals on the top of the fenders, etc.

Some of the coolent / heater hoses are getting scarce. Take a look at those for sure.

radiator fan and controller

a place to start.

Dear gawd, thats a lot of parts to stockpile. If I were to ask (courteously and nicely and with a cherry on top) for your absolute top items to buy, what would they be?

Reasonable prices for bare hood and front bumper?
I found in northern Texas unfinished hoods and a unfinished bumper. Had I found them earlier I may have went after a injured Sky. My Redline had the top vents shaved and paint job not up to my A standard I would get the hood and make the vents functional

When I was restoring my Sky in 2020, I found many Sky-specific parts still available through GM. I live in the north/west suburbs of Chicago and found a Chevy dealer in Schaumburg, IL who discounted many brand new Sky parts. The parts were a little more than other on-line places, but there were no shipping charges. I picked up the parts in-person at the parts counter.

Last year in 2021, I told my local Chevy dealer in Dundee IL about the other Chevy dealer's pricing. He ended up giving me the same discounts through setting me up in his database uniquely for special pricing. My most recent purchases from the Dundee dealer last year in 2021 was the Sky hood insulator, that huge delicate 1/8" thick black thing with the word "SKY" imprinted on it. At that same time, I bought the front chrome piece with the red Sky logo, and the rear back-up light with an all-clear lens.

My back-up light is the original early 2007 darkened one shown. I still need to swap them, then sell the original dark one. I never cared for the later red & clear version. I want 100% of that thing to give me as much "back-up light" as possible. It also looks nearly as clean and the darkened one which is naturally a matter of personal taste.

Other than yours I have not seen a tinted backup light. It looks more like an owner mod than anything OEM.

The part-red backup light is a Euro-spec light for the Opel. It was not fitted to the Sky. The red is a separately switched rear fog light.

I agree with you. I wish my Base Sky had dual exhaust tips like the Red Line. It would look properly balanced. Heck GM could not even install a 2-note horn in any Sky. How could I expect a dual exhaust in my Base? Doing so saved them a whopping $10......and it would be ludicrous to charge only the extra $10. With all I put into the car to-date, I can't justify doing it.

Even my 2014 Nissan Altima Sedan with the fuel economic 2.5L-L4 engine has dual exhaust to look right.....and it's just a family sedan.

I forgot about the horn....we know how low the horn sounds but that is an easy dollar fix...very easy. Look at your horn...you can buy the identical horn but louder if u wish...just run the two wires from your horn to the other side of your engine...the bracket that comes with your new horn attaches to the other identical side....All done. All your answers with pictures are in your search engine here..you just need some due diligence or be OLD like me

I do have a NOS Roadrunner horn that I’ve been tempted to install. 😇

I added the high note horn during my restoration of which I am well pleased with the result.

I am confident I myself can handle converting single to the dual exhaust with all appropriate RL components. It is the "expense in purchasing" everything needed for a clean OEM conversion that is preventing me from pursuing this modification. Some things I can justify, others I cannot. I do "officially" have the car for sale with mixed feelings about a successful sale. Any unnecessary expenses at this time are naturally avoidable, but if an exceptional local deal came up on all required parts, I might consider it regardless.
